About The Training

On any given day, there are about 2.2 million individuals behind bars. Data released by the Prison Policy Initiative (2019) indicated that incarceration rates in the United States are at an all-time high with the U.S. leading the world’s incarceration rate. Incarceration breaks family ties and has lasting effects on individuals’, families’ and communities’ emotional, economic, and psychological well-being. Despite the growing rate of incarceration, it is not often talked about in counseling. During this conversation, we will discuss our dependence on the carceral state and punishment and how we can move towards practices embedded in love, redemption and accountability. We will examine our notions and biases towards incarceration. And we will look at some ways to support clients, families and communities.

About The Training

Anxiety is often perceived as ‘the easy thing to manage’ as society continually tell us to “just relax and take a breath.” To many, this phrase is a kind and compassionate reminder but to some, it’s a dismissive gesture that discounts how difficult it really is to manage anxiety in a world that upholds systems of oppression. Individuals that are riddled with intense feelings of anxiety are often caught between a rock and a hard place. They are encouraged to let go of the ‘way they’ve always been’ and replace & manage maladaptive behaviors and thought patterns with unsustainable coping strategies. How do you manage anxiety within a society that supports behaviors that are causing you so much anguish? Perfectionism, competition, avoidance, and procrastination to name a few. In this presentation, we will explore how outdated approaches to managing a complex phenomenon like anxiety are not helpful and also consider how these approaches tend to perpetuate systems of oppression. Participants will be encouraged to consider how they currently respond to and treat anxiety in their various client settings and challenge themselves to consider how they are perpetuating characteristics of white supremacy myth when working in collaboration with clients who are experiencing symptoms of anxiety.

Online Video Training presented by Dr. Manuel Zamarripa. Facilitated by Melody Li, LMFT.

Subtitles are available.

About The Training

We’ll talk about Chicana/o/x well-being, and what that looks like in our lives today. We will draw from knowledge of our ancestral past as well as our current wisdom. Chicanx experiences and history includes varying ideas of what constitutes wellness and well-being as well as what constitutes appropriate help-seeking behaviors. Chicanx Psychology emphasizes the healthy, positive cultural values and behaviors that contribute to our wellness and mental health. Lessons from Chicanx Psychology can help DECOLONIZE the ideas of “wellness” that are dominantly Eurocentric, Western, and individualistic. This includes an awareness of how traditional/individualistic concepts in mental health can be culturally incongruent for Chicanx/Latine/Latinx populations. If the mental health field is to be responsive to this population, it must incorporate a broader view of wellness & well-being. Manuel will identify and discuss how to incorporate some of these notions in a mental health context with this population. This includes issues of identity development, family dynamics, and spirituality in psychotherapy.

About The Training

As therapists, we hold an immense amount of responsibility towards our clients. Early on, we often learn that we have to be “professional”, and act in a particular way, which fits the dominant narrative of cis patriarchal White Eurocentric standards. Being responsible is important, yet being integral is essential. As marginalized beings, we know too well the experience of being deprived of the opportunity to be who we truly are. As BIPOC. As queer folks. As immigrants. As therapists of any oppressed identity. We naturally learn to minimize our value.  So let us connect to our innate power as marginalized therapists, and recognize the immense work we do.   When we as marginalized therapists allow ourselves to embody our worth, we are able to cultivate authentic, balanced and ethical therapeutic relationships. From there, we can truly support our clients in healing themselves, and feel into their innate power.  In this process, it is also vital that we are aware of and understand how we engage with our power in order to best support our clients. In this training, you’ll learn how to reclaim your innate power as marginalized therapists. You will get a basic understanding of the Right Use of Power (developed by Cedar Barstow), learning the difference between personal, role and status power. You’ll uncover how authenticity is our most essential power. Finally, you’ll also learn how to transform microaggressions into ethical therapeutic interventions.
