About The Training

Research on accessibility to healthcare for fat individuals indicates that healthcare is largely inaccessible due to weight bias. Additionally, research points to weight stigma and fatphobia being a primary contributor to fat individuals having poorer health and mental health outcomes.

This training is designed to create a space for mental health clinicians to identify biases related to weight stigma and fatphobia that affect the accessibility of mental health care for clients with larger bodies. The training includes definitions and basic information about weight stigma and fatphobia, as well as a large group discussion to identify how weight stigma and fatphobia contribute to the marginalization of people with larger bodies. Finally, clinicians will discuss concrete ways to address fatphobia in their practice and create accessibility to mental health care for clients.

The creation of this training was inspired by the recognition of the multiple identities that are marginalized within white supremacist culture. Mainstream systems related to health are rife with fatphobia, with little recognition or correction, despite the majority of people in the United States living in a larger body (according to BMI statistics taken from CDC).

As an organization committed to dismantling all forms of oppression, recognizing and addressing fatphobia and increasing accessibility to mental health care for fat individuals is an important, though rarely addressed, area for further professional and personal development.

About the Presenters

Monica Jurado Kelly (she/her) is a fat, Latina anti-diet therapist in Round Rock, Texas. She works as a school social worker for Leander ISD during the school year. Monica is also the owner of Ascend Counseling and Wellness in Round Rock. As a person with several marginalized identities (woman, queer, fat, and Latinx), she is dedicated to helping others heal from the trauma of living in a white supremacist society. She loves to read, learn and talk about social justice and the intersections of feminism, race and ethnicity, sexuality and gender identity, and body liberation. One of her absolute favorite things to do is to help people look behind the curtain and see diet culture and fatphobia for the insidious, racist, patriarchal garbage heap it is.

Dr. Ebony, a native of Mississippi, is a Licensed Psychologist and Food Relationship Strategist who has made it her mission to help women of color heal and thrive in the areas of trauma and diet recovery. Dr. Ebony is a visionary and teacher. Dr. Ebony specializes in guiding women to develop skills that increase their effectiveness in interpersonal interactions, including communication and asking for/getting what they want and need. Dr. Ebony is specifically interested in issues that impact marginalized communities, including minority women and LGBT persons. Given the extensive amount of attention placed on body size and dieting in our society, Dr. Ebony understands how these pressures can impact one’s relationship with food and their bodies. Thus, Dr. Ebony is passionate about helping others recover from diet culture while also learning to shape their health in a more empowered manner.
