About The Training

We’ll talk about Chicana/o/x well-being, and what that looks like in our lives today. We will draw from knowledge of our ancestral past as well as our current wisdom. Chicanx experiences and history includes varying ideas of what constitutes wellness and well-being as well as what constitutes appropriate help-seeking behaviors.

Chicanx Psychology emphasizes the healthy, positive cultural values and behaviors that contribute to our wellness and mental health. Lessons from Chicanx Psychology can help DECOLONIZE the ideas of “wellness” that are dominantly Eurocentric, Western, and individualistic. This includes an awareness of how traditional/individualistic concepts in mental health can be culturally incongruent for Chicanx/Latine/Latinx populations. If the mental health field is to be responsive to this population, it must incorporate a broader view of wellness & well-being.

Manuel will identify and discuss how to incorporate some of these notions in a mental health context with this population. This includes issues of identity development, family dynamics, and spirituality in psychotherapy.
